In Jerusalem’s Old City, in the words of Mahmoud Darwish, you can walk from one age to the next, from one time to another, all within the same sacred geography. Geographically, geopolitically, mystically, Palestine is the heart, the conscience of the world, still beating, despite having been so deeply stabbed. By way of Jaffa Gate, take the Damascus Road and look for the spice market, where you will find all the flavors of the world, as I would do as a child, holding my father’s hand. Drink a cup of fresh pomegranate juice, when you rest your feet. Wonder at the coexistence of the three great religions, which I assure you, is nowhere to be seen on television. Step carefully into the invisible layer of the Eternal Jerusalem, which the public sphere has failed to capture, perhaps because it is incapable of conveying it through words and signs, but also perhaps because it fails to do its vital soul justice. If you do so, you will give yourselves the means to understand everything.
